Redding’s Economy Gets a Boost from USA Softball Tournament
Redding’s economy is getting a boost over the next week with the Redding Convention and Visitors Bureau partnering with USA Softball and Big League Dreams to bring the largest tournament to the Redding sports complex.
The 53-team USA Softball National Championship Western Qualifier girls fastpitch tournament for 14-and-under, 16U and 18U runs Wednesday through Sunday with two-time Olympic gold medalist Sheila Cornell Douty kicking it off as the master of ceremonies today from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
“This tournament will be the largest hosted at Big League Dreams’ Redding location since it opened its doors,” said Jeff Stanley, general manager of Big League Dreams. “We are honored to have been selected to host and have been preparing for this event over the last couple of years with upgrades that ensure a great experience for our players.”
The Redding CVB secured the tournament in 2017 and partnered with Big League Dreams to improve the facilities. Upgrades include replacing the playground equipment, updating scoreboards, building new portable mounds, installing misters and replacing trees. The tournament is a boost for the local economy between hotel stays, food, retail and attractions benefitting from the influx of travelers from Oregon, Washington, Nevada and California.
“We are proud to help grow our local economy and show how Redding can accommodate an event of this size, both on and off the field for all players, coaches, volunteers and families involved,” said Laurie Baker, CEO of the Redding CVB.
The tournament will consist of pool play and single-elimination bracket play. Games begin daily at 8 a.m. with the last game scheduled for 8:45 p.m. There is a gate fee of $5 per adult, $3 per youth 17-and-under. Tuesday’s opening ceremonies is free for anyone to attend, which includes a skills competition from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
