IRONMAN 70.3 NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COMES TO REDDING IN 2026

A world-class triathlon is heading to the Trail Capital of California.
When the sun rises over Whiskeytown Lake on August 16, 2026, hundreds of athletes will dive into its glassy waters for the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California, a new race that will showcase Redding’s natural beauty, endurance culture, and outdoor spirit on a global stage.

An IRONMAN Course Built for Adventure
For the first time, IRONMAN will bring its signature 70.3-mile challenge to Redding, the Trail Capital of California, where the Sacramento River cuts through town and 200 miles of trails connect to two major lakes.
The course promises a perfect mix of grit and grandeur: a 1.2-mile swim in Whiskeytown Lake, a 56-mile bike ride through the rolling hills of Shasta County, and a 13.1-mile run along the Sacramento River Trail that crosses the iconic Sundial Bridge before finishing near downtown.

Why Redding Was the Perfect Choice
Tim Brosious, Regional Director for IRONMAN, said the choice was an easy one.
“Redding is a gateway to adventure, with its iconic trails, lakes, and bridges. The city’s commitment to outdoor recreation and its welcoming community make it a perfect fit for an IRONMAN 70.3 event in this unique area of the country. We look forward to showcasing everything that makes Redding and Northern California a spectacular place to visit and race in.”
A Dream Realized for the Community
Tourism Marketing Director Danny Orloff shared the same enthusiasm, noting how long the community has dreamed of an event like this.
He said bringing IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California to Redding “is a dream come true for so many people in our community. This doesn’t happen overnight, but with strong partnerships, great things happen.
With world-class terrain and genuine hospitality, Redding is ready to shine. We can’t wait to welcome every racer and their families to experience the beauty, energy, and adventure that make Redding so special.”
Collaboration at the Heart of the Event
For Jennifer Johnston, Tourism Marketing & Communications Manager for Visit Redding, the race is about more than just competition; it’s a time for collaboration.
“IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California will be an all-hands-on-deck moment for our city, a chance for us to rally together and show what makes this community so special,” she said.
“We’re excited to partner with Choose Redding Lodging, our city leaders, and local businesses to make this race a smashing success.”

A New Chapter in Redding’s Outdoor Story
The 2026 race will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, giving athletes an added incentive to test their limits on Redding’s scenic course.
General registration opens November 13, 2025, at ironman.com/races/im703-northern-california.
Redding has long been recognized as Northern California’s outdoor sports capital, framed by Mount Shasta to the north and Mount Lassen to the east. With two national recreation areas, six state parks, and year-round sunshine, the city offers endless ways to train, play, and explore.
Hosting an IRONMAN 70.3 adds a new chapter to that story, one that places Redding on the international endurance map and invites the world to experience its trails, lakes, and legendary hospitality.
