California’s underground is full of otherworldly views, including Moaning Cavern in Vallecito and Black Chasm Cavern in Volcano. There’s always an adventure to be had exploring underneath the surface! In fact, one of NorCal’s most epic cave systems was just included on Lonely Planet’s list of the most underrated views in America. Lake Shasta Caverns is definitely a gem that’s worthy of your attention – if it doesn’t have it already!

Located right along the shores of Lake Shasta, the Shasta Caverns are a positively surreal destination in Northern California. Although “scenic beauty” isn’t what typically comes to mind when you think of underground caverns, the destination’s otherworldly nature makes it a must-see.

The Lake Shasta Caverns were recently included on Lonely Planet’s list of “The 6 Most Underrated Views and Vistas in America.” We have to say, we’re thrilled with the inclusion!

The caverns are a true natural wonder and are SO worthy of extra love. A trip to the iconic caverns is regularly touted as “Three Adventures in One” since it includes a scenic catamaran cruise across the lake, a bus ride to the cave entrance, and of course, the cavern itself.

Upon first look at these bizarre caverns, you’ll instantly believe you’ve been transported to the setting of a Sci-Fi movie. Dated to be at least 200 million years old, the caverns are a true testament to geologic forces at work.

The caves are made entirely of limestone and feature a variety of formations, like stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, and columns. Before 1964, the caverns were only seen by a handful of brave spelunkers who could access the caverns. Today, the destination attracts thousands of visitors annually.

The Discovery Room is one of the most impressive areas in the caverns. It’s just one of eight rooms in the entire cave system, but it makes a big impression with its massive display of limestone rock formations.

Seeing the Lake Shasta Caverns should be an item on every Californian’s bucket list. After all, these views are truly one-of-a-kind!
